OK! We all normally have five senses. We subconsciously react to our sense of smell, and taste is very important to us – especially when we’re very young. It is one of the reasons why babies stick everything in their mouths (although the mouth is also a kinesthetic sensory organ, too).
Nevertheless, we do not normally associate our senses of smell and taste as being useful for communication purposes - leaving us with three methods (or modes) of receiving and processing information:
- Visual
- Auditory
- Kinesthetic
This is often referred to as the VAK model.
Each of us has a natural preference for the way in which we prefer to receive, process and impart information. This is largely genetically determined, but is also susceptible to development, particularly when we are young (whilst our neural pathways are still being established). There are various ways in which preferred processing modes become apparent and some simple ways in which we can enhance the effectiveness of our communication once we are aware of them.
The fact that your classroom is split into students who process and impart information in three different ways means that lessons, which use predominantly visual stimuli will be less well received by two thirds of the class (assuming there is an even spilt, of course).
Understanding the VAK model, you will instantly see the potential of Talking Dice.
Visual
The dice are picture based, in curriculum topics – a total of 108 pictures.
Auditory
Students roll the dice and say what they see, encouraging speaking, and listening.
Kinesthetic
The dice are very tactile.
The applications for Talking Dice are wide and varied:
- Used for teaching first and second languages
- Encourage speaking, and listening
- Can be used in maths and science, in probability and charting lessons
- Used by speech and language therapists
- Suitable for SEN
- Suited to lessons from nursery to adult education
- Used to assess student’s speaking, thinking, and listening skills
